Alex Katz

Alex Katz's landscapes and portraits, characterized by flat expanses of vibrant color, reflect the polished aesthetics reminiscent of advertising billboards and cinema. Renowned for his depictions of Ada, his wife and muse, Katz has established a prolific career. He formulated his distinctive style as a counter to the Abstract Expressionism that prevailed during the mid-20th century, the period in which he began his artistic journey. Instead, he opted for narrative clarity and the engaging qualities of Pop art, while remaining independent of any specific artistic movement. Katz received his education at Cooper Union in New York and spent a summer honing his plein air painting skills at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before he began exhibiting regularly in New York and internationally. His works have been featured in exhibitions at prestigious institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai, among others. His art is part of numerous public collections, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Tate, and has achieved million-dollar sales in the secondary market.
