Often in art history, we see women depicted as muses in works created by male artists, which can reduce women to a product of the Male Gaze (Mulvey, 1975), and also overlook the importance of female artists. While self-portraits are a common expression of art, which have transcended to the ‘selfie’ in modern times, the most well-known usually feature male artists such as Andy Warhol and Vincent Van Gogh. We share our favourite self-portraiture pieces by women, of women.
